Large Blade Fins, often referred to as Practice Fins, are normally used to make swimming easier. This is done primarily through improved body position and relative ease of movement. As the ability of the swimmer develops, fins become a good tool to help learn new techniques and skills. These fins move a lot of water which makes kicking at a quick tempo difficult. These are very useful for novice swimmers and younger swimmers 12 and under.

Short Blade Fins, often referred to as Training Fins, are used to build strength, improve body position and promote speed. The best swimmers have the best kicks. These fins move less water and focus on endurance. Short fins are recommended for swimmers 13 and over who have already developed technique and are now focused on building lower body strength, which is essential for a strong, efficient stroke.
